I know of late, Julie had been talking about the importance of regular fitness assessments, as they really are a fantastic way to keep you on track and stay motivated. However sometimes I chat to girls and ask them about booking in a fitness assessment and they say they want to wait until they get a bit fitter. This has lately caused me to think about how we see ourselves, not so much what we see in the mirror, but more how we see our fitness levels.

When I teach classes, I constantly see girls who are achieving amazing things fitness-wise and increasing their fitness levels so much week to week. But how often do you take the time to appreciate that?

Just over 12 months ago, I was playing AFL every week, going to AFL training twice a week, playing touch footy once a week and also trying to get to the gym three times a week. And I remember thinking back then, "I just need to keep working hard so I can get fit". Not long after, I snapped my ACL in my left knee and needed a reconstruction and it wasn't until I had to stop all of that exercise and training, that I realize how fit I was before my injury. I was probably the fittest I'd ever been but never took the time to acknowledge that, I was always so hard on myself about my "lack of fitness"!

Since finishing Uni a couple of months ago and being able to focus slightly more on myself, I have set myself some goals to slowly work back to the fitness level I was previously at. This time though,I am taking the time to just stop and appreciate what I'm able to achieve. This time last year, I could hardly walk with the pain in my knee and now I'm actually able to go for a run! Ok, I'm not at the point where I can run particularly far, but I can run and I'm going to enjoy that small victory!

I guess the moral of my little story, girls is just to stop every now and then and think about what you're achieving. Are you fitter than when you started towards you health and fitness goals? I can almost guarantee that you are! Do you still find classes hard? I hope so! As trainers it's our job to keep pushing you to the next level so if it's not hard, we're not doing our job. And ok, you might still be working towards bigger goals, which is great, but don't forget to take time along the way to celebrate little wins.

So don't fear the fitness assessment, embrace it! Whether the results are awesome or not. And the next time you complete a class, just while you're doing your stretches, take a moment to think how amazing it is to be able to do what you just did.
